The day begins in the rocky landscapes of Herzegovina with a čokalj of homemade grape brandy and a spoonful of honey. It continues with cured prosciutto, artisan cheese, and kajmak aged in a traditional sheepskin sack, before giving way to hearty dishes such as raštan (collard greens) and smoked mutton. By evening, the table is completed with a few glasses of local wine.
For generations, this has been the region's timeless recipe for life. The people of Herzegovina like to say that only nourishing, honest food can sustain those who live in a land where, despite its unforgiving stone, nature rewards perseverance with extraordinary abundance.
These are also the indispensable delicacies that grace every table when guests are welcomed. Yet they represent only a fraction of the remarkable gastronomic heritage born from this land of rock, sunshine, and resilient tradition. Perhaps nowhere is that richness more vividly displayed than on the shelves of Herzegovačka Kuća (The Herzegovinian House), where vibrant colours, fragrant aromas, and authentic flavours come together to celebrate the region's finest local produce.

"When we opened our store, we worked with around twenty local producers and offered approximately 180 products," says Veselin Dutina, Director of the Agrarian Fund of Trebinje, speaking to HEDONIST Magazine. "Today, I am proud to say that our shelves feature nearly 1,000 products supplied by around 120 local partners."
The selection reflects almost everything southern Herzegovina has to offer - crafted according to recipes passed down through generations. Alongside traditional cured meats and dairy products, visitors will find natural fruit juices, herbal beverages, locally harvested honey, aromatic essential oils, handmade creams, and herbal teas prepared from medicinal plants gathered in the rugged mountains and hills that define the region.
"It's difficult to single out one bestseller because every product finds its audience," Dutina explains. "During the pandemic, however, locally produced honey was by far the most sought-after item. Trebinje's cheeses, prosciutto, wines, homemade brandies, fruit preserves, jams, and traditional sweet preserves are also consistently in high demand."
For decades, travellers from around the world have come to Herzegovina in search of perfectly aged prosciutto and exceptional dairy products. Today, the region's finest delicacies can all be discovered under one roof. The store attracts devoted gourmets, health-conscious shoppers, and visitors looking for authentic gifts that capture the spirit of Herzegovina.
"Our customers come from every corner of the world," says Dutina. "Anyone visiting Trebinje makes a point of stopping by Herzegovačka Kuća. We've welcomed guests from across Europe, as well as Japan, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, and Australia."
Long celebrated by locals, Herzegovina's rich culinary heritage has, thanks to Herzegovačka Kuća, evolved into a recognisable regional brand.

"We also help our producers build their own brands," Dutina explains. "Every product carries the name of the family that made it, allowing customers to know exactly which household - and which village near Trebinje - it comes from. Every item is professionally tested and certified for food safety."
Herzegovačka Kuća first opened its doors beneath the century-old plane trees of Trebinje in 2017. Since then, the concept has expanded to Banja Luka, East Sarajevo, and Belgrade, bringing the authentic flavours of Herzegovina to an ever-growing audience.
