Kotor and the Alchemy of Good Conversations

[object Object]

Not every event is remembered through the number of panels, speakers, or attendees. Some stay with us because of their atmosphere. Because of the city that hosted them. Because of conversations that lasted longer than planned and ideas that emerged long after the official programme had ended. That was precisely the spirit of this year’s CIM Forum in Kotor.

Over the course of several days, under the theme “The Alchemy of Creation - Wizards of Their Professions,” the ancient town beneath Kotor’s walls once again became a meeting point for people from different professions, industries, and countries who share one common belief: that creativity, knowledge, and curiosity remain the most valuable assets of the modern world.

Naturally, the Forum welcomed some of the most respected names from the regional and European creative scene. From Patrick Collister, one of the world’s leading creative directors, to filmmakers, journalists, communication experts, artists, sports leaders, and young professionals still shaping their careers.

Yet what will define the fifth edition of the CIM Forum is not only what happened on stage.

Much of its true value emerged in the spaces between the official sessions. In the squares of Kotor’s Old Town. Along its narrow stone streets. In spontaneous conversations after lectures. At dinners that stretched far beyond schedule. On a boat gliding across the Bay of Kotor. In encounters between people who had never met before, yet quickly found a common language.

At a time when many conferences are beginning to resemble one another, CIM has managed to preserve something increasingly rare: the character of the place in which it is created.

Kotor was not merely the host of the Forum. It was one of its participants.

Its medieval walls became an open-air gallery through the Flow/Tok exhibition. The Creative Market brought together designers and authors from various fields. The Health Corner opened discussions on health and prevention. Olive trees planted during the Forum left a symbolic and lasting mark on the city itself.

A particularly memorable atmosphere was created during the after-midnight session held inside Kotor’s former prison, where discussions explored freedom, identity, creativity, and the meaning of creation. It is difficult to imagine a setting more fitting for such themes.

Perhaps that is why the organisers have repeated for years that CIM is not simply a conference.

And it is hard to find a more accurate description.

Conferences end with the final panel. Experiences continue to live on.

In new collaborations. In friendships formed by chance. In ideas born during an evening walk by the sea. In conversations that evolve into projects months later.

At a time when many conferences are beginning to look increasingly alike, CIM has managed to preserve something that is becoming rare today - the character of the place in which it is created.

This year’s CIM Forum concluded with the CIM Awards ceremony, a donation to Kotor’s Protection and Rescue Service, and a message that the anniversary edition is, in many ways, only the beginning of a new chapter. Because the most important things that happened over the past few days cannot be measured through programmes or statistics. They are found in the people leaving Kotor with the feeling that they were part of something greater than an event itself. And those are exactly the kinds of stories the Mediterranean has always understood best.
