For adventure seekers looking for wild river currents and rapids, Republika Srpska offers plenty to choose from. Rafting is especially popular on the Tara and Vrbas rivers, both offering active recreation in a truly unique natural setting.

Rafting on these rivers is one of the country's most popular tourism draws, bringing in large numbers of visitors from the region, Europe, and beyond.

The Vrbas is a fast-flowing mountain river with wild sections and rapid drops, and under international river-grading standards, it ranks among Europe's most attractive rivers at grade 3–4. That said, there are also sections graded 1–2, offering everything from a wild, adrenaline-charged adventure to a calmer, family-friendly rafting experience. No paddling experience or skill is required of participants. Within just a few minutes, guided by experienced skippers, you'll become part of a well-coordinated paddling crew racing through foaming rapids and cascades. Routes run anywhere from 40 to 210 minutes, depending on the distance chosen - from 5 to 21 kilometers.

A memorable adventure wraps up with a traditional swim in the Vrbas and lunch at one of Banja Luka's restaurants right on the riverbank.

The Vrbas hosted the World Rafting Championship in 2009, along with numerous other international competitions in the sport - proof of just how thrilling rafting on this river is, for amateurs and professionals alike. The Vrbas is one of only a handful of rivers in the world that meet the requirements for every discipline within the sport. All of that is more than enough reason to enjoy its emerald, crystal-clear water.

Tourist rafting on the Vrbas is possible year-round, though spring and summer are unquestionably the best times to enjoy it. Another distinctive feature of rafting here is that this adrenaline-fueled activity takes place just about twenty kilometers from downtown Banja Luka, leaving plenty of room to explore the rest of what this Krajina gem has to offer.

Rafting on the Tara is one of Republika Srpska's most popular tourism draws. The Tara is one of Europe's most beautiful rivers, running through an 80-kilometer canyon.

At 1,300 meters deep, Tara Canyon is the deepest in Europe, and second deepest in the world after the Grand Canyon of the Colorado. Its water is exceptionally clean and represents Europe's largest natural reserve of drinking water, which is why it's known as "The Tear of Europe."

Like the Vrbas, the Tara also hosted the World Rafting Championship in 2009.

Difficulty on the Tara's rafting scale ranges from grade three to five, depending on a number of factors, but primarily on the season and water level.

Those looking to experience maximum adrenaline on the Tara should plan their visit for April, May, or the first half of June. On the other hand, as water levels drop in July, August, and September, certain rapids and striking currents disappear, while new ones emerge that aren't visible when the water runs high. That means the Tara always offers a slightly different experience each time you visit.

Along its final 25 kilometers, the Tara flows through the municipality of Foča. The municipality has a total of 22 registered camps, with accommodation capacity for around 1,500 guests. These are rafting camps that, beyond rafting itself, offer a range of other services, including multi-day packages that let you explore the stunning nature and landscapes of Foča and its surroundings, with a visit to Sutjeska National Park as an essential stop.

The camps are set in a spectacular natural environment, right on the riverbank. They offer high-quality, expertly built accommodations, mostly in the form of bungalows. Some also offer the option of hosting seminars, presentations, and smaller conferences.

The local food scene is a hallmark of this region - after all, following the thrill of a rafting descent, every guest needs a little adrenaline for the palate too, in the form of traditional homemade dishes prepared using old family recipes, which over time have, alongside rafting itself, become a reason in their own right for people to visit.

For those wanting even more, your hosts will happily arrange whatever adventure you're after: hiking, quad biking, canyoning, jeep safaris, or a trip into the Perućica rainforest...
