Wild Horses - A Symbol of Freedom on Cincar Mountain

[object Object]

Cincar Mountain near the town of Livno may be one of the very few places in the world, alongside Mongolia and Iceland, where you can still see wild horses living in complete freedom, worthy of admiration. That freedom gives a certain grandeur to their presence and an untamed energy to their gallop.

Horses are often described as royal animals. Personally, I knew nothing about this tour or this phenomenon, but since my girlfriend loves horses, we set off on an adventurous journey. She passed her love for these animals on to me, and through that, I learned a great deal about them. I did not believe in their intelligence and intuition until we visited several horse farms together. These magnificent animals understand and feel everything — every emotion you show them. They are gentle and know how to express respect.

How Wild Horses Came to Cincar

At the very foothills of Cincar Mountain near Livno, you can encounter a large number of incredibly beautiful wild horses that have lived there for years. They are descendants of domesticated horses that were once owned and cared for by humans. During the 1970s, urbanization began to affect this area, and machinery gradually replaced traditional forms of work. The horses were no longer needed. Since horses were not killed, their former owners released them to live freely. Today, more than seven hundred horses roam proudly in the wild.

How to Visit the Wild Horses Near Livno

The easiest and best way to see these horses is through an agency that organizes tours across Cincar Mountain. For around 20 euros, you get a guided safari, visits to scenic viewpoints, and, if arranged in advance, the possibility of organizing lunch in nature. My choice was fritters with Livno cheese, a taste I still remember today. I recommend traveling with an agency for safety reasons. Limited knowledge of the local terrain, roads, and vast open spaces can be a significant challenge. The area where the horses roam is enormous, and it may not be easy to find them on your own.

Safari Experience and a Guide Through Cincar

During the safari, the guide told me that sometimes horses can be searched for hours. The agency I recommend is called “Continental Adventures.” Jako Mamuza is an exceptional guide who creates engaging tours where, alongside visiting the wild horses, you can learn a great deal about the history of the old town of Livno as well as about these proud animals. Professional photography services are also available. The agency can be contacted via Facebook and Instagram.

Encountering Horses in Untouched Nature

It is almost unreal that our country offers the opportunity to enjoy watching these animals in an environment of untouched nature, where their gallop carries a sense of dignity and nobility that words cannot fully describe. Words simply fail to capture the scenes unfolding before your eyes. You can approach them, pet them, feed them, and sit beside them.

The horses move in herds and approach visitors without fear, allowing you to pet and feed them while enjoying the moment. It is important to note that conflicts between herds may occur, usually over food or mares. In such situations, listen to the guide and slowly move away. Another important rule is to avoid loud noises and sudden movements. This tour is meant for enjoyment and relaxation. My partner especially fell in love with one black horse, while my favorite was an incredible brown German royal horse I named Target. I grew up watching cowboy movies, so it was stronger than me.
