Alagovac - The Sea of Nevesinje

Lake Alagovac, often referred to as the "Sea of Nevesinje," lies at the foot of Mount Velež, about four kilometers north of the town of Nevesinje. It is the largest lake in the Nevesinje Valley and, at an elevation of 860 meters, captivates visitors with its peaceful surroundings. Nestled among forests, the area has many secluded beaches that can only be reached by gravel roads, adding to its untouched charm.
Covering an area of approximately 40 hectares, Alagovac is an artificial lake created in 1968 when the Alagovac stream was dammed with an earthen embankment. Its original purpose was to provide drinking water for the town, but in recent years it has also become an increasingly popular tourist destination.
The lake is the only artificial lake in the Municipality of Nevesinje. Stretching nearly 2.5 kilometers from north to south, it remains an important source of fresh drinking water while also serving recreational and tourism purposes.
Alagovac is well known among anglers thanks to its rich fish population, including carp, catfish, grass carp, and silver carp. The lake is regularly stocked with fish by the "Zalomka" Sport Fishing Association from Nevesinje, which also manages fishing activities on the lake.
Its natural sandy beaches require little or no development to be enjoyed. Visitors can comfortably settle by the shore, soak up the sun, swim in the refreshing water, or simply relax in the shade surrounded by nature.
