When night falls over the Vrbas River, few places in the region look quite like Kastel Fortress. Ancient stone walls, an open sky above, and the river flowing just steps away have long created an atmosphere that makes every concert here feel a little different. This summer, that atmosphere is gaining a new chapter in the festival.
Days spent along the Vrbas, lively café terraces, evening strolls through Banja Luka’s famous Gospodska Street, and Kastel Fortress itself, year after year becoming an increasingly important stage for the city’s cultural life, have helped transform the largest city of Republika Srpska into one of the region’s most appealing summer destinations.
That is precisely why it is no surprise that this July, the centuries-old fortress walls will provide yet another reason for thousands of visitors to gather.
The premiere edition of the Summer Stage festival will take place at one of the city’s most attractive open-air venues, introducing a new music event that aims to become part of Banja Luka’s summer identity while further enriching the city’s tourism and cultural offer.
Over the past several years, Kastel has demonstrated just how naturally history, music, and a relaxed Mediterranean-style rhythm of life can coexist. Few venues in the Balkans allow audiences to enjoy live performances within centuries-old stone fortifications while a river that has shaped the city’s identity flows only a few steps away.
For many visitors arriving in Banja Luka during the summer months, events like these often become a reason to extend their stay. A city once known primarily for its nature and hospitality is increasingly earning recognition as a festival destination as well.
This year’s Summer Stage will unfold over two evenings.
On July 16, the festival will open with Vesna Zmijanac, one of the region’s most celebrated performers, whose repertoire has brought together generations of music lovers for decades. Her evening at Kastel will feature many of the songs that have become part of the soundtrack of the region.
A day later, on July 17, Jelena Karleuša will take the same stage. Known for large-scale productions, visually ambitious performances, and high-energy shows, she is expected to deliver one of the summer’s most talked-about concert experiences.
Organizers are announcing a major production and visitors from across the Balkans, suggesting that Summer Stage could immediately become one of Banja Luka’s largest summer events.
Tickets for both festival nights are already available through the online platform ulaznica.org, as well as at the official sales point on Trg Krajine.
And for anyone planning a summer visit to the city on the Vrbas, the concerts may be only part of the reason to come.
It will also be another opportunity to experience Banja Luka at its finest - during long summer evenings beneath the open sky of Kastel Fortress.
